"H & K Fuller"

This portrait of Kitty and Harry Fuller, children of James W. Fuller and Emily Mangold, was likely made on a trip to the DuQuoin, Illinois studio of their uncle J. G. Mangold. Three family cartes de visite contain on the backs consecutive negative numbers: 2033, 2034 and for this particular one, 2035. They suggest that Susan Mangold brought her little niece and nephew, chaperoned by her older sister Sarah Chester, to DuQuoin. They would have traveled by rail on the Illinois Central Railroad, which runs straight up the center of the state. Anna, Carbondale, and DuQuion are stations along the route north. Emily Fuller's husband was a section boss for the railroad from its early years. Original writing survives on the reverse side of the mount: "I penciled this picture. Emily Fuller." The children's mother hand tinted her daughter's dress as well as the rug and the fringe on the posing chair in this carte de visite. Kitty is wearing a "low body" dress with a gathered "corsage" and "full infant sleeves." Her skirt has at least one growth tuck and she is wearing a hoop.
