Affidavit of Willis Martin Mangold

State of Illinois
County of Union

In the matter of claim for Miles J. Barnum Sergeant Co. H 18th Illinois Infantry Volunteers Personally came before me, a Notary Public in and for aforesaid County and State, Willis M. Mangold, who resides near Cobden, Union County, State of Illinois, a person of lawful age, who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: My name is Willis M. Mangold. My age is 34 years. My Post Office address is Cobden, Union County Illinois. I have been personally and intimately acquainted with Miles J. Barnum from his discharge until the present time. As during his absence from here, I have heard from him often by letter, and otherwise. I know at the time of his discharge he was suffering from disease of the liver, spleen, kidney, and heart, the result of an injury or wound to the left side. During his absence from here, I have often heard from him, and, that he was still suffering in the same way and was not able to do much of any labor from these diseases. For the past two years he has lived about 1/4 of a mile from me, and I have seen him as often as two or three times per week in that time. He is still suffering with all of these complaints, but very much worse, particularly disease of the heart. And that he has been confined to his room a great deal of time, and is compelled to take medicines all of the time for these troubles. I am of the opinion that he is not able to do any manual labor without serious injury to him, and perhaps causing his death; he cannot ride on horseback or in a wagon on a rough road. He is seriously troubled with lifting inguinal hernia. I make these statements from my own knowledge of him, and from what I have heard from physicians of him. I further declare that I have no interest in said case, and that I am not concerned in its prosecution.
